The SINGLE project was represented at the IEA 2025 Task 3 Workshop, held in Muldersdrift, South Africa, from 28 October to 1 November 2025. Marie-Laure Fontaine, Chief Scientist and Research Manager at SINTEF, was invited to speak at this invitation-only event organised under the IEA Advanced Fuel Cells Technology Collaboration Programme.
During the workshop, Dr. Fontaine presented SINGLE Infopack #4 – “Nitridation of metals”, which summarises SINGLE’s experimental work on how different alloys behave when exposed to wet ammonia at high temperatures and pressure. The study tested seven alloys (with different Fe, Ni and Cr contents) to support materials selection for the ammonia-to-hydrogen PCER system developed in SINGLE. The results show that Ni-based alloy 625 offers the best resistance to nitridation across a wide range of conditions, while more common steels such as 316L are suitable only below ~300°C.
Her contribution was part of the session on “Ammonia cracking and uses” and connected SINGLE’s findings with ongoing research in the Norwegian FME centre Hydrogeni. She also joined a panel discussion on ammonia, providing the perspective of the SINGLE consortium on materials and system durability.
