On December 12th, 2024, the first online SINGLE webinar took place, featuring four distinguished panelists from the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Ljubljana: Prof. Mitja Mori, Andrej Lotric, Domen Hojkar, and Jure Gramc.
The webinar emphasized the importance of understanding and measuring greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions to meet climate targets, comply with regulations, and remain competitive in a low-carbon economy. It focused on two key methodologies under the EU Horizon SINGLE project: Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and the Renewable Energy Directive III (RED III).
LCA, based on ISO 14040 and ISO 14044 standards, assesses environmental impacts across a product’s lifecycle, providing a robust framework for sustainability. RED III, developed by the EU, sets strict emission thresholds—28.2 g CO₂ eq/MJ or 3.384 kg CO₂ eq/kg—within the hydrogen value chain.
The session explored these methodologies, highlighting their differences and practical application through a case study of the SINGLE ammonia value chain.
